When a ship is ready to retire, the green ship recycling process is carried out to end the service of the vessel in the most sustainable way that does not harm the environment.

The shipping industry is indeed one of the world’s biggest polluters, as it generates a large amount of waste every single day. Ships get rid of tons of garbage from day-to-day activities, and the process of abandoning a ship after it reaches the end of its service life also leaves a huge amount of poisonous waste, giving rise to potential hazards to the environment.

-       It helps to isolate those parts of the ships which are harmful to the environment, marine life and human lives as well.  There are several toxic substances inside a ship. These harmful components include lead, asbestos, mercury, oil sludge, and more. Inefficient methods like shipbreaking allow the poisonous and harmful waste to be disposed of dangerously in an open space or the seas, thus harming humans, as well as the aquatic lives. The green ship recycling process removes all these hazardous practices, thus helping the environment.

-       This method helps to properly discard the waste products of the ship, helping in preserving the marine ecosystem which is the need of the hour. Most of the factories release their toxic wastes in the seas harming the lives of the marine ecosystem and if the shipping industry would also continue to do this, then in no time half of the marine lives will vanish permanently from this earth.

-       This method also deals with reusing the valuable components of a ship which include steel, aluminum, brass, and silver, among others. As a huge part of a ship’s weight is in steel, the steel scrap from the retired vessel gets converted into rods, bars, and pillars for several other industrial purposes. Hence, this helps in saving the resources of the earth for future use.

-       This environmentally safe and sound recycling process of a ship also offers the best utility of the ship’s parts to its owner. With the strategic disassembling of the retired ship, the materials to be reused are kept with extra care. The steel, along with other metallic materials, is used for making rods and poles to be used in the construction industry, along with producing hinges and corner castings. The generators, lights, and batteries which were a part of the scrapped ship (vessel scrap price), get reused for various other purposes.

The green ship recycling process is not only responsible for saving human and marine lives but also takes care of the resources by reusing them and saving them for the future generations.
